Fischer Family Quilting

Tips for Success

What should I expect working with Fischer Family Quilting?

In everything we do, we strive to be:

  • Helpful - We are happy to answer any questions you have in a kind and courteous manner.
  • Creative - Quilting is a fun and creative hobby, and we enjoy trying new things as much as you do. Are you curious about double-needle quilting? Custom quilting? Did you see something at a quilting show that you would like to replicate? Let's talk and get creative together!
  • Easy to work with - We see ourselves as your partners in the creative process. We will do everything we can to be up-front and clear about expectations, and will strive to give you the best experience possible.

Why should I use a longarm quilter at all?

  • Quilting at Home can be Difficult - Quilts can be heavy! Sometimes it is difficult moving a heavy quilt back and forth under a sewing machine. Muscle and joint problems can make this task unenjoyable at best or impossible at worst.
  • Better Quality and Consistent Results - Computer control makes gaps or mistakes in patterns less likely, and patterns can be stretched, rotated, or tweaked to fit odd shapes and sizes.
  • Unique Patterns - Are you looking for something different from a tried-and-true stipple pattern? If so, partnering with us is a great way to explore new, creative quilting patterns to accentuate your piecing.

Ok, I'm sold! What do I do now?

  • Consultation - Contact us to set up an appointment. We will review the available quilting patterns together to determine the best one for your project and discuss pattern size, borders, etc. We will also audition thread to best match your project. We will answer your questions and provide a detailed quote.
  • Quilt Top - For best results, press the seams of your quilt top so they don't bunch or roll while quilting. There are always loose threads from piecing, but trimming away as many loose threads as possible is helpful (especially dark threads behind light colored pieces).
  • Quilt Back - Provide a quilt back that is at least 8 to 10 inches longer and wider than your top.  This will provide 4 to 5 inches all around to mount the quilt back to the longarm quilting machine frame. You can use muslin or other scrap fabric to achieve this, if necessary. Also, consider washing, drying, and pressing the fabric before quilting.
  • Batting - We stock high-quality Quilter's Dream batting in a variety of widths, lofts, and varieties, and can suggest batting that will best meet your needs. If you choose to not use Quilter's Dream, please have the batting available during our consultation.
